Rising country star Alexandra Kay caught the attention of one of the genre’s most beloved legends when she covered one of his songs.
Kay delivered a rendition of “Deeper Than the Holler,” a classic ballad that Randy Travis released in the late 1980s on his 10-track studio album, Old 8x10. The song remains one of Travis’ most memorable hits today, along with “On the Other Hand,” “Forever and Ever, Amen,” “I Told You So” and many more. Most recently, Travis, 65, released “Where That Came From” with the help of AI [Artificial Intelligence]. Travis recovered from a 2013 stroke, though it left him with lasting damage to the part of his brain that controls speech and language. The AI single that Travis released in May 2024 marked the legendary country artist’s first new studio recording in more than a decade.
Kay, 33, has gained a social media following over time by covering songs by other country stars while pouring herself an iced coffee. She’s previously shared covers of songs by Dolly Parton, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, Jo Dee Messina. She’s since toured with McGraw, Jelly Roll and other powerhouse artists. Travis beamed as Kay performed “Deeper Than the Holler.” Kay’s jaw dropped when she saw the reaction, and shared in a message to Travis, “you have been such an inspiration to me! Thank you for doing this! You are a legend!” On Tuesday (January 21), she shared another video of Travis testing “my knowledge of his greatest hits!” Watch Kay’s cover of “Deeper Than the Holler” by Travis here:
